HEALTHY HABITS DAY 21: PRESENCE
We're in our final week of the Healthy Habit series already!
My hope and inspiration through these posts is for us to become more aware of how we care for ourselves - physically, mentally, emotionally, energetically. And a big part of cultivating healthy habits is being mindful of how we spend our time.
Ultimately it's about how present we are in our lives- with ourselves, others, our family, and friends and even how engaged we are with the things we are doing online (conscious tech use).
In a Harvard study, psychologists Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert found that people spend almost 47% of their waking hours thinking about something other than what they’re currently doing. That's nearly half our day not being focused, intentional or present!!
When was the last time you gave 100% of your attention to, well...anything?
It’s human nature to do multiple things at the same time and with constant distractions it can be challenging to get things done efficiently and completely.
I recently read an article that stated that multitasking is a myth and that focusing on one thing at a time is a superpower. Imagine! Known as single-tasking: doing one thing at a time.
While this article was in the context of work environments and provided stats related to increased productivity and lower stress through single-tasking, I think the same message translates into our personal lives, relationships, and our healthy habits practices.
So how can we practice more presence with ourselves?
I have noticed with myself that when I take time to unplug from technology, I feel more peace, more connection, and more grounded. Similarly, I've also become much more focused, organized and disciplined when working: removing/limiting phone distractions, using time blocking/scheduling for greater, more efficient productivity and using healthy habits to further enhance brain power and cultivate mental fortitude.
How can you weave in more single-tasking and presence into your life?
