HEALTHY HABIT DAY 15: FOOD AS MEDICINE

We all know we should eat healthy food. So do we? No, not always.

I think an optimal place to be is when we can honestly say: yes, mostly.

So, what constitutes healthy? Of all the health sciences, nutrition is the most confusing, with no one set standard. There are countless theories, methods and diets when it comes to nutrition and dietetics (the science of how nutrition affects our health). 

What we can agree on is that optimal nutrition is foundational to health and vitality.

So what is optimal? The short answer is, it depends. And it differs! We are all unique beings, with unique needs, goals and preferences and so our nutritional choices will reflect that. 

However, there are a few key principles that I believe constitutes optimal, healthy nutrition that can be applied to everyone and still with room to accommodate our varying uniqueness.

Key principle for today: Food as medicine. 

It's no secret that we have become nations of people who are overfed and undernourished. Chronic diseases, illnesses and conditions have skyrocketed and continue to rise at alarming rates. What is also shocking is that in conventional medical training, approx ONE hour of nutrition training is given. ONE hour! In 8+ years of schooling.

Hippocrates, more than 2000 years ago, understood that we should use food as our medicine and medicine our food. Part of this means developing more awareness about our relationship to food, and how the foods we're choosing impact brainpower, energy levels, mood, even sleep.

Tomorrow we'll explore some other key concepts but for today, I invite you to consider: On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is poor and 10 is the epitome of health, how would you rate your current nutrition?
